People search for free face age verification for two different reasons: they want to prove their age to a platform, or they just want to know how old they look. Those are different jobs, and a free online tool can only do the second one.

The short answer

Face age estimation predicts an age from a photo. Face age verification confirms that a person is at least a certain age, and the platform that asks for it decides which evidence it accepts. Estimation, verification and assurance

• Age estimation: a model looks at a face and outputs an age or an age range. No document, no name.
• Age verification: the person proves their age with evidence, most often a government ID or a trusted record.
• Age assurance: the umbrella term for any method a platform uses to be confident about a user's age, including estimation, ID checks and parental consent.

Many platforms combine these: a quick facial estimate first, and an ID check only when the estimate is close to a limit or the user disagrees with it.

How facial age estimation works

A neural network is trained on a large number of face photos whose ages are known. It learns which visual cues tend to go with which age, such as skin texture, lines around the eyes and mouth, and the shape of the face. Given a new photo, it outputs its best guess. The same idea powers a face age detector or an AI age checker, only the training data and the quality of the model differ.

It cannot

• Prove your age or your identity to anyone.
• Replace an official age check that a game, app or website requires.
• Be accurate enough to make a decision about a person's age.

Privacy questions worth asking

Before you take any face-based age check, look for clear answers to these:

• Is the photo or video deleted after the estimate, and how quickly?
• Does the service keep a face template or biometric data?
• Which company does the estimation, and under which privacy policy?
• Is there an alternative, such as an ID check, if you prefer not to use your face?
