Roblox Face Age Check: How Facial Age Estimation Works

Roblox now uses age checks to decide which features and chat options an account can use. One of the two ways to complete the check is a selfie-based facial age estimate. Here is what Roblox says about how it works, and where a free face age test fits in.

What the Roblox age check is

Roblox describes an age check as a process designed to evaluate a user's age so accounts get age-appropriate games and features. Roblox states that all chat, Restricted Content, chat without filters with trusted friends, and collaboration using TeamCreate in Studio require an age check, and that more features may be added over time.

The two ways to complete it

• Facial age estimation: Roblox estimates your age from a selfie-style video of your face.
• ID verification: you verify your birthday with a government-issued photo ID. Roblox says this is only available to users 13 and over.

How the facial age estimation works

Roblox says it estimates age by analyzing images and video of your face and examining facial features, and that it works with a third-party service, Persona, which captures a selfie-style video. Roblox states that images and video are deleted after processing, and that Roblox does not receive or store biometric data from the process.

The result places an account in an age group. Roblox lists the estimation groups as 5-8, 9-12, 13-15, 16-17, 18-20 and 21+, and says that in some regions a parent's approval is needed to complete facial age estimation.

How to start it on your account

1. Log in to your Roblox account.
2. Open Settings (the gear icon on desktop, or the More menu on mobile).
3. Go to Account info.
4. Under Age Group, choose Continue with selfie, or Continue with ID if you prefer that.
5. Follow the on-screen instructions.

What each age group can do

Roblox's Help Center describes the account groups as follows:

• Under 9: Roblox Kids, with parent approval for chat.
• 9-12 and 13-15: Roblox Select, with chat among similar age groups or Trusted Friends.
• 16-17: Roblox, all games except those rated 18+.
• 18+: full access to games and features.

If the estimate is wrong

Roblox says that if you believe your age was estimated incorrectly, you can verify your birthday with an ID, and that a linked parent can update the birthday of a child under 18, once. Where a free face age test fits in
