Facial Age Estimation: How It Works and How Accurate It Is

Updated

Ask ten face age calculators about the same photo and you can get ten different answers. That is normal. Here is what an age estimate really tells you, what moves it, and how to get a fairer result when you guess age by picture.

What facial age estimation measures

Facial age estimation, also called face age estimation or simply age estimation, is done by an age estimator that looks at the visual signs of age in a photo, such as skin texture, lines around the eyes and forehead, and the shape of the face, and predicts the age of a typical person who looks like that. It does not know your birthday. It reports how old your face looks, which is why the same person can get a different number from a different photo.

How accurate is it when you estimate age from a photo?

Age estimation is an approximation. Most systems are off by a few years on average, and the error is larger for children, for older adults, and for photos taken in poor conditions. That is why we show a range next to the number rather than a single age: a result like 34 with a range of 28 to 40 is more honest than 34 alone.

What changes the result

  • Lighting: harsh overhead light deepens lines; soft daylight from the front flatters them.
  • Camera angle and distance: a lens close to the face distorts features, and looking down or up changes the shape of the jaw and eyes.
  • Expression: a big smile creates lines that a neutral face does not, and squinting adds more.
  • Filters and makeup: smoothing removes texture the model relies on.
  • Image quality: blur, noise and heavy compression hide detail.
  • Glasses, beards and hair: anything covering the face changes what the model can see.
  • Training data: models can be less accurate on people who were under-represented in their training photos.

Face age, real age and biological age

Your real age is the number of years since your birth. Your face age is how old your face looks in a photo. Biological age is a medical idea about the condition of your body, and no photo-based tool can measure it. A face age that is a few years younger or older than your real age is normal and says nothing about your health.

How to get a fairer reading

  1. Face a window or soft daylight and look straight into the camera.
  2. Hold the camera at eye level, about an arm's length away.
  3. Use a neutral or relaxed expression, and pull your hair back from your forehead.
  4. Skip filters and heavy makeup.
  5. Try two or three photos and read the pattern, not a single number.
