How to measure your face shape
Stand in front of a mirror or use a straight-on photo, pull your hair back and relax your face. Then take four measurements.
- Face length: from the middle of the hairline to the bottom of the chin.
- Cheekbone width: across the widest part of the cheekbones, just below the outer corners of the eyes.
- Forehead width: across the forehead, between the two temples, at its widest.
- Jaw width: across the jaw at the angle just below each ear.
Use the same unit for all four. The calculator works with ratios, so it does not matter whether you measure in centimeters, inches or pixels on a photo.
The seven face shapes
Oval face
Length is about one and a half times the width, with a forehead slightly wider than the jaw and a softly rounded chin. It is the most balanced shape, so few styles are off limits.
Round face
Length and width are close, the cheeks are the widest part, and the jaw and chin are soft with few angles.
Square face
Forehead, cheeks and jaw are similar in width, and the jaw is strong and angular.
Heart face
The forehead is the widest part and the face tapers to a narrower jaw and chin.
Diamond face
The cheekbones are the widest part, with a narrower forehead and jaw.
Triangle face
The jaw is the widest part, with a narrower forehead and cheekbones.
Oblong face
The face is noticeably longer than it is wide, with a fairly straight cheek line and a forehead, cheeks and jaw of similar width.
